Joe drove Hernandez and me to the Barrio andwe stopped on Park Avenue, across the street fromthe Mercado Mexicano. First I wanted to watch thestore. We saw a lot of people going in, then leavingwith bags of food. Some big expensive cars stoppedin front of the store, but only for a short time.People from the cars went into the store and quicklycame out, but not with bags. I took photographsof everyone.
After an hour I asked Joe, "What's going onover there?"
"I don't think everybody's buying food," replied Joe.
There was nobody shopping in the store whenJoe, Hemandez and I went in. Inside the door I saidto Hemandez, "You wait here. I'm going to ask tospeak with Lopez first."
Lopez came out of the back door, but now hedidn't look friendly. "You're back, Marley. What doyou want from me?" he asked.
"I've brought the old friend I told you about thismorning, Mr. Lopez. Mr. Hernandez just wants tospeak with you."
"Mike, it's good to see you again," saidHernandez, walking up to him. "I did my time inSing Sing, but I never talked to the cops about you.Nothing. Do you have my money? I need it to makea new start. You see, now I got nothing."
Lopez laughed at him and took five hundreddollars from his wallet. "You're not the boss mannow, Hernandez. You're nobody," he said coldly."Take the money and run. I don't want to see yourface in the Barrio again."
Hernandez looked at the money, then lookedback at Lopez. "Five hundred dollars! You had fiftythousand of my money!"
Lopez laughed again and said, "Things change inthis city. There ain't nothing here for you."
"Oh yeah?" replied Hernandez angrily. "I guessthe police need to ask you some questions. Likewhat are you selling here? And who shot Rodriguezand Garcia?"
